Illinois Family Health Insurance Terminology
Agent: Agents do not necessarily work directly with one health insurance company. An agent is a licensed salesperson who works with you to find the right health insurance plan for you. An agent can represent several health insurance companies, and they are responsible for informing you of the various products of the various companies they represent in order to give you more choices.
Co-Payment: A flat fee paid for a doctor visit or specialist visit or even for prescriptions that is determined by your health insurance policy. It is not based on a percentage (not usually anyway) and is always the same as long as your policy is in effect.
Exclusions: Medical benefits that are not covered by your health insurance policy. These are normally caused by pre-existing conditions that your health insurance company will not provide coverage for.
Lifetime Maximum Benefit: The most a health insurance policy will pay out to an individual during that person's lifetime. Many policies have a maximum lifetime benefit, and you may be able to have it raised but it will bring about higher premiums. Most family policies will have a maximum lifetime benefit for each individual insured person. Be cautious of a low lifetime maximum benefit, as it could leave you in the lurch in the case of a serious or chronic illness.
Stop-Loss: This is an important level in your family health insurance. You are at stop-loss when you have paid the deductible and reached the maximum on your co-insurance. At this point your health insurance company begins paying 100 percent of your medical expenses as described in your health insurance policy.
